A just-released New York Times investigation exposes how Trump’s DOJ distorted a far-right report to punish his critics and advance his vendettas. Add your name to condemn this dangerous abuse of power.

Friend,

The Department of Justice is supposed to protect the rule of law – not twist it into a weapon of political vengeance. But according to a just-released New York Times investigation, that’s exactly what Donald Trump’s DOJ is doing.[1]

The Times reports that the Justice Department urged federal prosecutors to investigate philanthropist George Soros, his family, and their organization Open Society Foundations – citing a report from a right- wing group. But here’s the catch: even the group’s own president admits their research did not find any evidence of illegal activity by OSF.

That didn’t stop Trump’s DOJ from distorting those findings to justify possible criminal charges anyway.

Scott Walter, president of the right-wing Capital Research Center, said his group was “taken aback” that the DOJ used its report as the basis for a potential criminal investigation. He emphasized that “only lawbreaking, not mere speech, should receive prosecution.” Legal experts agree the report doesn’t support any case against the Soros family or the Open Society Foundations – which have long been targets of Trump’s conspiratorial attacks.

This episode is part of a disturbing pattern. In recent weeks, Trump’s DOJ has also indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey – two of his most visible critics. It’s a campaign of retaliation meant to punish dissent and consolidate power, not uphold the law.

The Justice Department should never be twisted into a political tool. Every time Trump’s administration distorts the facts to attack its perceived enemies, it undermines the very foundation of democracy – and moves our country closer to authoritarian rule.

The law must be applied fairly to all, not used to advance personal vendettas, and particularly not to advance a president’s agenda of retribution. People For was founded to defend that principle – to expose corruption, protect civil liberties, and ensure that power is never abused in the name of justice.

We can’t stay silent while the Trump regime turns the nation’s highest law enforcement agency into a weapon against its critics.
