Dear Friend,
We are now one week into the federal government shutdown. While some in Washington treat these standoffs as routine, the consequences for working families, seniors, and small businesses are anything but.
Each day this shutdown continues, Americans experience unnecessary uncertainty. Veterans await benefits. Federal employees go without pay. Health care providers face disruptions to key programs that help deliver care to those most in need. Communities across Massachusetts and the nation are feeling the strain.
This situation was entirely avoidable. Congress has an obligation to fund the government and meet its commitments to the American people. Yet a small faction has chosen confrontation over compromise — threatening the stability of our economy and the continuity of basic services in the process. [[link removed]]
As a senior member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, I have long believed that responsible governance is the foundation of economic growth and public confidence. As Ranking Member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, I have long believed that responsible governance is the foundation of economic growth and public confidence. Democrats in Congress are working to end this shutdown, preserve health care coverage, and save millions of Americans from massive increases in health care premiums. We will continue protecting programs like Medicare and Social Security, and ensuring families have access to essential health care and support.
The people of Massachusetts expect and deserve a government that functions, one that keeps its promises and honors its responsibilities. That is the work I remain committed to each and every day.
In Service,
Congressman Richard Neal
