Friend,

Today the Government has announced that new mothers must now be offered a minimum of a three-day stay in hospital after giving birth.

As Associate Health Minister, I will be responsible for this Bill, reflecting a key commitment in our coalition agreement.

This is a practical and compassionate step that puts women and their wellbeing at the centre of our health system.

The Three-Day Postnatal Stay Amendment Bill will now progress through Parliament and the Government is making sure the health system is well-prepared for this support to be implemented.

“Every woman deserves the option of a three-day stay after giving birth if that is what she chooses as part of postnatal care.” – Winston Peters

New Zealand First demanded this policy during our negotiations with National to be included in our coalition agreement.

Friend, we recognise that childbirth is different for every woman, but no one should be made to feel they have to leave hospital or a birthing unit before they are ready.

By guaranteeing every woman up to three days to rest, recover, and bond with their baby, women will have the choice to be where they feel most comfortable.

I look forward to the Ministry of Health working with Health New Zealand to progress this work prioritising mothers, babies, and Kiwi families.

This is another important promise kept by New Zealand First.
