Dear John,

International Day of the Girl Child is here, a day to honor girls everywhere and take action to create a world where all girls can live safely, happily, and freely. We hope you’ll join us on this special occasion by showing your support with a gift of $25 or more.

Equality Now works to end child marriage around the world, including in Latin America and the Caribbean. In November 2024, with our partners, we successfully supported efforts to ban child marriage in Colombia, benefitting 1.4 million girls and adolescents. This year, we worked with partners to close a legal loophole in Bolivia’s Family Code, which had permitted marriage from age 16 with parental or judicial authorisation, but still affected girls as young as 13.

Equality Now supported progress in Bolivia by providing legal arguments based on international human rights standards to our local partners and the Senator promoter of the Bill. In August, we also contributed to an event titled “Voices Driving Change: Strategies to Address Child, Early, and Forced Marriages and Unions in Latin America and the Caribbean”, where women from across the region shared powerful testimonies and reflections. Together, they demonstrated how child marriage can restrict access to education, health, and personal development, and limit autonomy and opportunities for girls and adolescents.

The combination of legal guidance and survivor-led advocacy proved pivotal in sparing generations of Bolivian girls from the life-altering impacts of child marriage. It also builds momentum for similar bans in other Latin American countries.

None of this would have been possible without your support – thank you for standing beside us and women and girls everywhere. But there’s more work to be done to end child marriage in Latin America and the Caribbean, where several countries still lack comprehensive child marriage bans. Can you help us maintain momentum and continue to drive change?

Together, we can end child marriage and create an entire world where girls can finish school, have financial security, and become wives or mothers in their own time, if at all. Thank you for helping to make this work possible.

In solidarity,
Bárbara Jiménez Santiago
Regional Representative, Latin America and Caribbean

P.S. John, please consider contributing today to help support our efforts to ban child marriage. Your gift will help create a better world for everyone. Thank you.
