John,
I am writing to you with disheartening and urgent news.
As you know, at the end of 2017, President Trump issued an outrageous Executive Order carving up Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments — eliminating protections on an unprecedented two million acres of public land.
Following the deeply flawed Executive Order, the administration is rushing to sell off the formerly protected public lands. Yesterday, they published their proposed management plan that proposes development on hundreds of thousands of acres of the original Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
Taking away protections for two million acres of our public land and making them available to the highest bidder — should not be happening at all! These public lands belong to all of us and should not be drilled or mined for private profit.
Help us stop this reckless rush to develop, and push the administration to restore protections for Grand Staircase-Escalante now!
We cannot stand by as the administration works to destroy nearly half of Grand Staircase-Escalante. Allowing any part of these lands — the unique rock spires, archeological sites, or striking landscapes — to fall into the wrong hands could do irreversible damage, and sever the priceless connection we have to our natural world that make these lands so special.
Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is home to rugged canyons, breathtaking geological formations like its Toadstool Hoodoos, and bold skies that make it a recreational paradise. We cannot allow the administration to place these special lands into the hands of private corporations. Demand the administration stop this rushed process and bring back protections for all of Grand Staircase-Escalante. Our collective voice is loud, and together, we will not stop fighting until ALL of Grand Staircase-Escalante is protected.
Thank you,
Jordan Schreiber
