Dear John,
Ever since the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law in 2010, it has authorized funding for insurance plans that cover abortion. Democrats intentionally wrote the law this way to circumvent the Hyde Amendment, which prevents federal taxpayer funding of abortion. In 2014, Congress added subsidies by which the federal government pays a portion of people's insurance premiums for ACA plans. These subsidies were increased in 2021 during the COVID pandemic so that the government covered more of the cost of people's health insurance, and they were later extended and set to expire at the end of 2025.
Now, Democrats have shut down the government and are demanding a permanent extension of these subsidies. Some Republicans are considering giving in, despite the fact that these subsidies fund abortions and gender transition procedures. Your members of Congress need to hear from you!

There is no doubt that the ACA funds abortions. Family Research Council's own research found that 59% of ACA plans included coverage for elective abortions in 2022. Some states, such as California, mandate that ACA plans cover abortions in their state.
Additionally, some states use the ACA to cover costly and controversial gender transition procedures (GTPs). Some insurance plans require GTPs to be treated as "medically necessary," despite the lack of evidence that has prevented the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from approving drugs for use in such procedures. The largest insurance provider in the ACA marketplace, the Centene Corporation, publicly states that "gender-affirming procedures" are "medically necessary" and therefore covered by their insurance plans.
The COVID ACA subsidies will be sunsetted at the end of 2025 and they should be allowed to expire as planned. However, if Congress does vote to extend these subsidies, the extension must explicitly include the Hyde Amendment and similar protections that prevent taxpayer funding for gender transition procedures.
Send a message to your members of Congress now, encouraging them to stop funding abortions and gender transition procedures through the COVID ACA subsidies!
Sincerely,
