Updates from D.C.

It’s been ten days since Trump and House Republicans shut down the federal government, and they still haven’t called the House back to work. While Democrats have stayed in Washington ready to act, Speaker Mike Johnson continues to hold the American people hostage to his party’s chaos.

Here in Texas, that chaos has consequences. Federal workers are missing paychecks. Veterans are waiting longer for benefits. Families are struggling to access critical health and nutrition services. And the longer this goes on, the more it hurts working people who can least afford it.

Let me be clear: Democrats are at work waiting for Republicans to wrap up their vacation and join us. It’s time for Mike Johnson to bring his caucus back, get to work, and stop playing politics with folks’ lives.

My office is open and available to assist you. If you need assistance, you can call my Dallas Office at (214) 922-8885 or my D.C. Office at (202) 225-8885.

Today, I sent a formal letter to the White House physician demanding answers about President Trump’s health and fitness to serve. Americans have seen the same concerning signs—visible swelling, memory lapses, and confusion—and deserve the truth about their president’s condition. My letter calls on the White House to come clean about the President’s medical history and explain how they concluded he’s in “excellent cognitive and physical health.”

This week, I spoke at a Steering and Policy hearing on the health care impacts of the shutdown to make sure my colleagues understood exactly what this means for Texans.

Republicans keep saying, “trust us.” But time and time again, they’ve shown us exactly who they are. From skyrocketing grocery prices to rising health care costs, they’ve broken every promise to working people while protecting billionaires and corporate interests.

Even some Republicans are starting to realize the damage their own policies have caused. As I said during the hearing: “The fact that Marjorie and I agree on anything tells you how bad this is.”

This shutdown is hurting real people—families who need care, workers who need paychecks, and communities that can’t afford another political stunt. Democrats are on the job. It’s past time Republicans do theirs.

I joined Chris Hayes on MSNBC’s All In to talk about what’s really happening during this shutdown. Republicans are playing games with people’s lives—from their hypocrisy on health care and the Affordable Care Act to the distractions they’re creating around the Epstein files.

Instead of leading, Speaker Mike Johnson is stalling and playing politics while families pay the price.

Tele-Town Hall: Rescheduled for Tuesday, October 14

Last week’s tele-town hall was postponed, but I’m looking forward to connecting with you this coming Tuesday, October 14, at 6:30 PM CT.

We’ll talk about what’s really happening in Washington, how the shutdown is affecting Texans, and how Democrats are fighting for working Americans.

I’ll be taking your questions and sharing resources to help you navigate this moment.

Congressional App Challenge

Each year, I invite students across Texas 30 to put their creativity and coding skills to the test in the Congressional App Challenge—a nationwide competition that highlights the next generation of tech leaders.

This challenge gives students a chance to design their own original app, compete locally, and earn recognition for their innovation. The winning app from our district will be showcased in the U.S. Capitol for one year, alongside winners from across the country.

The goal is simple: to inspire, include, and innovate—by expanding access to STEM, coding, and computer science opportunities for all students.

If you or a student you know loves technology and problem-solving, I encourage you to participate.

Visit: TX30.us/app for more information.

Changes to the Citizenship Test

Starting October 20, 2025, anyone who files for naturalization will face a new version of the civics test. The updated exam expands the question pool from 100 to 128 questions and requires applicants to answer 12 out of 20  questions correctly to pass. If you submit your application before October 20, you’ll continue with the current 2008 test. Seniors aged 65 and older with 20+ years of residency will still take a shorter 10-question version. Make sure you know which test applies to you before filing—your deadline matters.
