A Message from Gabe:

Greetings Rhode Islanders,

Ten days ago, the federal government shut down because President Donald Trump and Republicans would not agree to legislation that both keeps the government open and lowers your health care costs.

Despite their control of the White House, Senate, and House, the funding bill that Trump and Republicans support shut down the government. Democrats are calling on Republicans to address the health care crisis and reopen the government. With the expiration of the Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, if Republicans fail to act, 22 million Americans, including 40,000 Rhode Islanders, will see their health care premiums skyrocket. Rhode Islanders affected by this health care hike would see their premiums increase by 200%

Without an extension of Affordable Care Act tax credits:

  • a 60-year-old Rhode Island couple earning $82,800 a year would see annual health care costs rise by $14,609
  • a Rhode Island family of four earning $129,000 a year would see a $6,857 increase.

The Big, Ugly Law already cut more than $1 trillion from America’s health care system. If Republican policies continue, Americans will be sicker and poorer.

I've had enough — Republicans need to agree to stop the cuts, lower costs, save health care, and open our government.

Congressman Amo hears how health and accessibility go hand in hand with the National Federation for the Blind Rhode Island.
Congressman Amo thanks the men and women at Coast Guard Station Castle Hill who are protecting our water, even without pay during a shutdown.

This shutdown is hurting folks across our state. I've spoken with countless Rhode Islanders affected by the shutdown. I visited Coast Guard members at Coast Guard Station Castle Hill in Newport to thank them for keeping our waters safe, even as they work without pay.

I joined families and advocates for the Northern Rhode Island Out of the Darkness Walk to Prevent Suicide to discuss the need to stop the Big, Ugly Law’s health care cuts and extend lifesaving health care assistance that helps more than 40,000 Rhode Islanders afford their monthly health care payments and access mental health care.

I met with leaders in the blind and low vision community at the 55th Annual National Federation of the Blind Rhode Island Convention, where attendees shared just how critical Medicaid is to ensuring accessibility for every Rhode Islander.

As this shutdown continues, I will continue to focus on addressing the health care of Rhode Islanders and ensuring that we reopen the federal government to serve the people of our state.

Should Republicans work with Democrats to reopen the government and lower health care costs?

Stopping Trump's Policies from Hurting Women and Kids

Congressman Amo visits Children's Friend, a key state partner in helping pregnant women, moms, infants, and kids access WIC and get the nutrition and health support they need.

This week, I led 49 of my colleagues in introducing the Continuity and Reimbursement for Essential Nutrition (CARE) for WIC During Shutdowns Act to ensure states have certainty that they will receive federal government reimbursement to ensure moms and kids see no disruption to the Special Supplemental Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) when there is a federal government shutdown.

WIC helps feed nearly 7 million low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, as well as infants and young children across the country, including over 18,000 Rhode Islanders. I am fighting in Congress to make sure every Rhode Island mom, mom-to-be, and child sees no disruption to WIC.

Met with Neighborhood Health Plan CEO Peter Marino to discuss how their work to provide affordable health care will suffer.

He told me that 89% of their clients will see costs spike without action from Congress.

We must keep fighting for the health care you deserve.

Honored to participate in the Northern Rhode Island Out of Darkness Walk to Prevent Suicide.

Proud of the hope and resilience in our community.

That’s why I’m fighting in Congress to ensure every American can get needed mental and behavioral health care.

Lives are on the line.

People often ask me what makes Providence so special. The answer is easy: it is the passion of its residents.

Glad to stop by the Providence Foundation's 50th anniversary celebration to look back at all the progress Providence has made and hear about the opportunities to come.

Protecting Our Troops' Pay

Amidst this shutdown caused by Republican policies, I sent a letter alongside 78 of my colleagues demanding that Speaker Johnson bring legislation to the House floor to ensure military personal get paid by October 15th. The brave men and women who serve our country, including those at Naval Station Newport and around the globe, should receive the pay that they earn.

In solidarity, I formally requested that my pay be withheld for the duration of this shutdown. If our troops are not being paid, Congress should not be paid either.

Countering Trump's Policies in the Courts

The Trump administration's policies are being challenged and overturned in court. Americans have filed over 437 lawsuits against the administration, and judges have partially or fully blocked over 138 of Trump's executive actions.

Recent Courtroom Wins:

TRUMP APPOINTEE BLOCKS TRUMP ADMINISTRATION FROM CUTTING COUNTERTERRORISM FUNDS TO DEMOCRATIC STATES — A federal judge, appointed by Trump, struck down the administration's attempt to slash $233 million in counterterrorism grants intended for states with Democratic governors.

JUDGE BLOCKS NATIONAL GUARD DEPLOYMENT IN OREGON — A federal judge blocked Trump from deploying California's National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon, against the will of both governors.

✅ AMICUS BRIEF TO PROTECT THE UNITED STATES INSTITUTE FOR PEACE (USIP) – I filed an amicus brief alongside current and former Members of Congress to oppose Trump’s closure of the USIP and to protect our work to promote peace around the world.

It Is Past Time to Swear in Adelita Grijalva

Adelita Grijalva is the incoming Member of Congress for the people of Arizona’s 7th Congressional District. But Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has not yet sworn in incoming Representative Grijalva as a member of the United States House of Representatives. I joined 179 Members of Congress to demand Speaker Johnson schedule the swearing in of incoming Representative Grijalva for October 3, 2025. Speaker Johnson declined to do so.

It is long past time for the House of Representatives to swear in incoming Representative Grijalva.
