[1]Alex Padilla for Senate

Friends, it’s Alex.

The rule of law in America is under attack. Let me explain:

As Attorney General Pam Bondi made clear at yesterday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing — the Department of Justice does not care about upholding the rule of law. Only the rule of Trump.

What does that mean?

It means that when Trump demands the DoJ go after his enemies, they do. And if anyone raises alarms or calls it out, they’re quickly replaced with someone more willing to follow Trump’s marching orders.

And it also means that if you’re one of Trump’s allies… the Department of Justice will look the other way.

Just look at Tom Homan, one of the people in charge of Trump’s mass deportation agenda. Reuters reported he took $50,000 cash in a fast-food bag in exchange for steering government contracts.

And yet, nothing from the DoJ. And when asked about it yesterday, AG Bondi deflected and refused to answer even basic questions about the case.

Friends, the Department of Justice’s legitimacy rests on public trust and the wide belief that prosecutions are based on the facts and the law, independent of politics or personal fealty to the president.

But under AG Bondi, the Department of Justice is being politicized and weaponized in ways we have never seen before to benefit Trump.

When I asked AG Bondi yesterday if government officials are obligated to follow the law, even if they disagree, she refused to answer.

The DoJ is making these changes and refusing to commit to following the law because Trump and Bondi want to use the Department not to pursue violent crime, corruption, and threats to national security, but instead to target Trump’s enemies.

Friends, in my role as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I’m going to continue investigating and calling out Trump’s weaponization of the Justice Department.

But really setting things right will require winning back control of Congress in the midterms.

And frankly, we need your help to do it.

I’m working hard to support my colleagues in the Senate running for reelection, and I’m also working to pass prop 50 here in California and protect some congressional seats from Trump’s power grab.

But if we’re going to win, I need you to get involved.

As Governor Newsom says, “Elections are not something to sit back and witness — they are something we can shape.”

For some people, that means signing up to volunteer. For others, it could even be posting online or talking to your friends about what’s at stake in the midterms.

But right now, today, here’s my request: please chip in to help take back control of Congress and protect the rule of law in the United States of America.

In California alone, a single billionaire has spent over $10 million against Prop 50. And then there’s the Senate races, each of which will likely attract 100s of millions in Super PAC spending.

I know that compared to those numbers, your contribution can feel small.

But it’s not just your contribution.

Right now, across California and across the country, there are people just like you reading this email.

They’re chipping in $5, $10, $25 dollars because they know how important the midterms are going to be for the future of our country, and now they’re counting on you to do the same.

It doesn’t have to be a lot. Even a few dollars makes a big difference and just as importantly, lets me know you’re on our side for the work ahead.

Here’s the link one more time to chip in if you can.

Thank you so much for not giving up and staying in the fight.
