John,
In case you missed it, after 500 National Guard troops arrived in the Chicago area yesterday, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order that blocked the Trump administration’s deployment of said troops. [1]
The judge said: “I have seen no credible evidence that there is a danger of a rebellion in the state of Illinois.”
Using troops to intervene in American cities without genuine emergencies or requests from local leaders goes against our democratic and constitutional norms.
Congress must hold the executive branch accountable — no matter which party is in power — to ensure it does not overstep the limits set by our Constitution.
Add your name to show Congress that we want them to act now to prevent our nonpartisan military from being misused as a political tool.
What’s more is that recent polling showed that 53% of Americans support limiting the ability of presidents to deploy troops domestically, and 80% oppose letting the president order the military to use force against peaceful protestors. [2]
Luckily, there’s real action that Congress can take to prevent any abuses of power when it comes to using troops on domestic soil.
Congress could amend the Insurrection Act to add limits, require transparency, and demand congressional approval for any deployment lasting more than 14 days.
It’s critical that Congress protect our democracy and Constitution for generations to come. Add your name that Americans want them to prevent misusing our military and future abuses of power.
