Email from Rep. Nehls Rep. Troy E. Nehls Provides Update on Day 10 of the Democrat Shutdown Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap of what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. Today marks day ten of the Democrat Government Shutdown. Senate Democrats continue to hold the federal government and the American people hostage by refusing to support a clean, short-term funding bill. This bill would keep the government open through November 21, 2025, allowing Congress to progress in completing the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 appropriations process. Instead, Democrats are pushing an alternate proposal that would increase government spending by $1.5 trillion. Democrats are demanding that hardworking Americans be forced to fund their radical proposal, which includes nearly $200 billion for healthcare for illegal aliens and other non-citizens over the next decade. In the Democrats’ $192.8 billion plan to fund healthcare for illegal aliens, they want you to be forced to bankroll: $6 billion for Medicaid for non-citizens. $28 billion for emergency care to illegal aliens. $34 billion to allow California to use a back-door loophole to fund healthcare for illegal aliens. $5 billion for Medicare for non-citizens. $91 billion for Obamacare for non-citizens. $27 billion for special Obamacare subsidies for non-citizens. Further, they want $500 million in taxpayer funds to prop up liberal news outlets, billions in taxpayer dollars to fund climate projects in foreign projects, and they want to cut $50 billion from investments in improving rural healthcare. You can read the Democrats’ wasteful, partisan spending proposal here. You’ll find the Democrats’ proposed repeal of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act’s safeguards against waste, fraud, and abuse in healthcare on page 57, section 2141. Over the past ten days, we’ve seen the unfortunate consequences of the Democrat Government Shutdown. Each week the shutdown extends, an estimated $15 billion will be wiped out in U.S. GDP. Our nation’s Veterans are impacted. Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) regional offices are closed, and the VA’s GI Bill hotline is closed. Our brave servicemen and women are at risk of missing their next paycheck due to the Democrat Shutdown. Air Traffic Controllers, Border Patrol agents, federal firefighters, FBI agents, and millions of Americans who protect and serve our nation are being forced to work without pay. Small Business Administration (SBA) loan distributions are also frozen during a government shutdown. Not to mention, the Democrat Shutdown is causing flight disruptions and travel delays for Americans as we see an increase in Air Traffic Controller shortages across the country. A vote against this continuing resolution (CR)—which Democrats voted for just six months ago, and have voted for 13 times under the Biden Administration—is a vote against the 1.3 million active-duty troops, nearly 50,000 members of the U.S. Coast Guard who are working unpaid, and over 13,000 Air Traffic Controllers who are working without pay. A vote agianst the House-passed bill is a vote against Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents, 150,000 federal law enforcement officers, including the men and women of the Border Patrol and ICE, who put their lives on the line every single day, and work around the clock without pay due to the Democrat Government Shutdown. House Republicans did our job. We passed a clean CR that keeps the government open and working for the American people. Unfortunately, Democrats are continuing to inflict pain on all Americans to cater to radical left-wing activist groups. Service Academy Nominations Close Extended Through Friday, October 24th Due to Democrat Government Shutdown My office is now accepting Service Academy Nominations. Due to the Democrat Government Shutdown, the application deadline has been extended to Friday, October 24, 2025. One of the privileges of serving in the United States House of Representatives is the opportunity to nominate outstanding young people from the 22nd Congressional District of Texas to be considered for appointment to our nation’s service academies. Admission to a service academy is a two-tiered process. First, the candidate must meet the minimum standards set by the individual academy. Second, the candidate must complete the congressional application by October 24, 2025, to be considered for an interview in our office with the nomination review board. Please note that the ultimate selection of appointees rests solely with academy officials and is based on their competitive evaluation of all nominees. The checklist and application can be found on my website. If you have any questions, please email

Federal resources, such as those provided by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Ready.gov, offer valuable guidance, including emergency alerts, disaster planning tools, and response checklists tailored to individual and family needs. As hurricane season approaches, staying proactive can make a significant difference. Monitor trusted sources like the National Hurricane Center for real-time updates and establish a comprehensive emergency plan that covers evacuation routes, family communication, and essential supplies. It’s also wise to prepare your home by securing outdoor items, reinforcing windows and doors, and reviewing your insurance policies—especially for those in coastal or flood-prone areas. For further assistance, FEMA’s Resource Library for Individual Assistance provides clear information on disaster support services, how assistance works, and what steps to take after applying. If you’ve already submitted a claim, visit I Applied for Assistance. What's Next? on FEMA.gov for guidance on next steps. Be sure to check out my website for further local and state resources on how to prepare for a natural disaster. If you have any questions or need support, please contact Congressman Nehls’ Fulshear District Office at (346) 662-6600. Our office is here to assist you throughout this hurricane season.
