Friend,

I want to talk about where things stand with Schumer’s shutdown.

I voted to keep the government open while bipartisan appropriations work continues. When Biden was president, Democrats were on board to pass short-term funding bills to keep the government open. But now that Trump’s in office, they refuse to do the same – instead demanding

  • $1.5 trillion in new spending,
  • free healthcare for illegal immigrants,
  • and repealing work requirements for able-bodied Medicaid recipients.

Meanwhile, pay for our troops, veterans’ care, and nutrition benefits for low-income moms is at risk. I voted to keep the government open, and ensure Americans have access to the vital services they need.

As Schumer himself said last September:

A government shutdown means seniors who rely on Social Security could be thrown into chaos as the Social Security Administration limits certain services, like benefit verifications or fixing errors in payments. Our veterans could see regional VA offices shut down and support services put on halt. Some of our military service members could be forced to work without pay. Families who benefit from WIC and other nutrition programs could see benefits halted. And a shutdown would shake the confidence of our economic recovery, something we can’t possibly afford at a time like this.” – Senator Chuck Schumer, September 2024

Hopefully, September 2024 Chuck Schumer pages 2025 Chuck Schumer and tells him to stop appeasing his Left flank while placing unwarranted stress on American families and reopen the government. I will continue fighting to reopen the government for Iowa families.

Sincerely,

Honoring Iowa's Veterans

Recently, I was honored to present medals to the family of Staff Sergeant Roger Schaefer, a WWII hero who dedicated his life to defending our country and even served in the Battle of the Bulge, for which he received Bronze and Silver Stars. On one occasion, he singlehandedly neutralized two enemy machine gun placements, causing a group of German riflemen to surrender.

We are incredibly grateful for his service, and I was so proud to recognize his legacy in Jesup. God bless our brave military heroes — past and present.

Restoring the American Dream of Home Ownership in IA-02

I was thrilled to join a kickoff celebration for Clayton County’s Affordable Housing Project! I was able to secure $500,000 in federal funding to help launch this project.

By supporting the strong demand for housing access, this project will help working families achieve the dream of home ownership. It will help more people grow their families and put down roots in Clayton County — I was proud to be a part of it!

Casework Wins for Iowans

Serving my constituents is my top priority. Iowans sent me to Congress to deliver results and make government run more efficiently. Democrats’ shutdown threatens the ability to help Iowans in situations like the below. Schumer and his left flank must stop playing political games and reopen the government so we can continue solving issues for Iowans.

Tax return issued: Resolved!

A constituent came to us after the IRS showed no record of his tax return, even though he had proof it was received. My office worked with the Taxpayer Advocate Service to resolve the mix-up and provide the necessary paperwork. The IRS confirmed the return was being processed, and he was relieved to finally see progress.

IRS Penalty: Reduced!

A constituent was scammed out of her retirement savings and then faced a steep IRS penalty that could have cost her home. Our office worked closely with IRS officials to reach a fair resolution and get this resolved. The penalty was greatly reduced, and she was very thankful for our help.

Veteran Records: Updated!

A constituent wanted to correct his father’s Army records to honor his service. My team helped him and a family friend work through the discrepancies with the National Archives. They now have what they need to submit his father’s name to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund!

Tax Refund: Paid out!

In another case, a constituent contacted us after waiting months for her tax refund and struggling financially. My team went back and forth with the IRS to get the right paperwork and verify her employment. Thanks to that work, her refund was finally processed and delivered.
