Friend, I believe that transgender rights — and the rights of all LGBTQ+ people — are worth fighting for. That’s a non-negotiable for me.

In 1996, I voted against the anti-LGBTQ+ Defense of Marriage Act, even though it was an unpopular position at the time.

In 2010, I voted to repeal the homophobic “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy that banned openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual people from serving in the military.

In 2023, I introduced the landmark Transgender Bill of Rights in the Senate, the most ambitious legislation to ensure equality and protections for trans people.

I introduced that legislation as a direct response to the far-right's growing campaign of discrimination that has played out in state houses across the country, and now in the White House, too.

We’ve all seen how Republicans have shamelessly attacked trans people to play partisan politics and mislead the American people about the facts.

And the result has been devastating: Bans on gender-affirming care, defunding of life-saving resources and research, censorship in schools and libraries, and the targeting of transgender people in the workplace by the Trump administration.

I believe that Democrats have a responsibility to build a majority coalition that proudly supports trans rights and stands up to the GOP’s fear-mongering and hatred — not throw trans people under the bus in the face of Republican lies and smears. When you give the far-right an inch, they take a mile and roll back decades of progress.

Trans people, like all marginalized people, must be included in any movement that believes in the dignity of every human being and fights to make our country safe, affordable, and prosperous for all.

In solidarity,

— Ed Markey

P.S. It’s a difficult time for many as the government shutdown drags on. I am asking my top supporters who can afford to chip in right now to donate any amount to help keep our campaign funded. Despite the Republican chaos in Washington, we still have a campaign to win here in Massachusetts. Please, use this link or the button below to make a contribution. Thank you for being part of this movement for progress in America.
