John, this week the news broke that 282 former Department of Justice officials, including prosecutors, FBI agents, intelligence analysts, immigration judges and civil rights attorneys, signed an open letter sounding the alarm on the "destruction" of the department under President Trump.

These were nonpartisan career officials making the most sweeping and serious accusations [[link removed]] against a sitting president since Richard Nixon.

We’ve been following the officials like these who have sounded the alarm about what they saw within the Trump administration, and here’s what we found:

Since Trump’s second term began, at least 72 government officials have resigned in protest after being asked to do something they believed to be illegal or in violation of their oath of office.

Eight executive agencies and five independent agencies have been affected by these resignations, with many of the departures involving senior officials. The IRS alone lost its Chief Financial Officer, Chief Privacy Officer, Chief of Staff and Chief Risk Officer.

At least 19 of those who have resigned served in their agencies for a decade or more—with some nearing 40 years of service—and some have served up to six presidential administrations.

In total, that’s nearly 450 years of civil service experience lost because civil servants refused to violate the law or their oaths of office. John, let that sink in .

Every administration sees resignations, but this level of resignations in protest is without precedent. When lifelong public servants resign en masse like this, it’s a clear warning that democracy is at risk.

We found [[link removed]] that at the DOJ, officials with a combined 124 years of service have resigned after being asked to follow an order they believed was inappropriate.

One of the first officials to do so was interim U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Danielle Sassoon, who resigned after refusing to drop corruption charges against New York City’s Mayor Eric Adams.

Since then, we’ve also seen a Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia resign rather than bring flimsy charges against former FBI Director James Comey.

This loss of expertise from the 72 officials who have publicly resigned in protest is striking and a serious blow to government functioning— especially since it may represent just a fraction of those pushed out.

The second Trump administration is sending a clear message: get in line or get out. And the government has lost years of expertise as a result.

The Trump administration’s approach to dissenters who refuse to obey orders that are illegal, unconstitutional or unethical has authoritarian characteristics, and it could reshape our federal government in dangerous ways.

CREW is on the frontlines of protecting our democracy, and we’re fighting to hold the Trump administration accountable and defend the public servants who swore an oath to uphold the Constitution.
