Friend,
Nine days into a government shutdown, Republican House Speaker Mike
Johnson has one strategy: do nothing.
He’s keeping the House out of session indefinitely – refusing to negotiate
with Democrats, refusing to reopen the government, and refusing to extend
the Affordable Care Act tax credits that millions of families rely on for
affordable health care coverage.
Members of Johnson’s own party are starting to break ranks. Republican
lawmakers are calling his decision “embarrassing.” Even Rep. Marjorie
Taylor Greene – yes, that Marjorie Taylor Greene – publicly condemned
Johnson’s inaction and urged him to address what she called an impending
“health care crisis.”
While families lose coverage and workers go without pay, Johnson continues
extending the House recess instead of doing his job. It’s cynical. It’s
cruel. And it’s hurting people every single day.

Democrats have been clear about what needs to happen. At a recent press
conference on the shutdown, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries drew a
sharp contrast between Republican priorities and the needs of working
Americans that Democrats are fighting to protect. He rejected a
short-term, one-year extension of the ACA tax credits and reminded
Americans of the hypocrisy at play:
“[A one-year extension is] not acceptable. It’s a non-starter. It was
introduced by the same people who just permanently extended massive tax
breaks for their billionaire donors. Think about that.”
Republicans were more than happy to hand out permanent tax breaks to
billionaires – but when it comes to helping working families afford health
insurance? The best they’ll even think about is a one-year fix.

and fix the healthcare affordability crisis. >>
Enough. Americans deserve a Congress that shows up for them – not one that
hides from its responsibilities while families struggle. Every day the
House stays home is another day of missed paychecks, rising health costs,
and uncertainty for millions. This isn’t leadership; it’s negligence. It’s
time for Congress to do its job and put the people’s needs ahead of
political games.
In solidarity,
Zach VanHouten
