Fireside Sessions

Week 2 of Democrat Shutdown

This week marked the second week of the Democrats’ harmful government shutdown. Instead of preventing a lapse in funding by approving the House-passed Continuing Resolution (CR), which maintained current spending levels to allow negotiations to continue, Senate Democrats are demanding an extension of COVID-era Obamacare premium tax credits. These were temporary emergency subsidies that were always intended to sunset. Unfortunately, Senate Democrats are choosing to withhold pay from our federal employees and servicemembers rather than continue negotiations.

Despite the shutdown, my office remains open and committed to serving you. While we are unable to process requests for U.S. Capitol flags or tours during this time, we continue to assist constituents who need help with federal agencies. Please note that there may be delays in agency responses due to the shutdown. For more information, visit the shutdown guidance page on my website.

Stephen F. Austin State University Tour

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of touring Stephen F. Austin State University’s campus to learn more about their impressive research and development initiatives. I was encouraged to see the high level of innovation happening right here in East Texas. In particular, I was impressed by SFA’s programs supporting energy development and workforce training in the region. SFA is leading the way in preparing students for the future economy. Axe ’Em Jacks!.

Leroy/Axtell First Responders Weekend

Congressman Sessions at Leroy/Axtell First Responders Weekend
On Saturday, I was honored to join the Central Texas community in celebrating our local heroes during the Leroy/Axtell First Responders Weekend. I am deeply grateful for the men and women who volunteer their time and risk their safety to protect our rural McLennan County communities. Their dedication and sacrifice are truly inspiring. Their service and sacrifice remind us what true courage looks like, and it was great to come together as a community to show our appreciation.
Legislative Highlights

H.R. 139Sunshine Protection Act of 2025
On May 22, 2025, the Texas Legislature passed House Bill 1393, and Governor Greg Abbott signed it into law on June 20, making Texas the latest state to vote for permanent daylight saving time. However, under the federal Uniform Time Act of 1966, states may opt out of daylight saving time (as Arizona and Hawaii have done), but they cannot remain on daylight saving time year-round without congressional approval.

That’s why federal action through H.R. 139, which I proudly co-sponsored, is essential. This bill would authorize states to observe daylight saving time permanently, giving Texas and others the freedom to set their own policies without federal restrictions.
