I’m writing to you today with a sense of urgency. The Trump administration has now weaponized the entire federal government in an effort to silence dissent and punish organizations that the administration perceives as enemies. While shocking, this is not a total surprise; I warned that this could be coming in my July 2024 Prospect article “The Left’s Fragile Foundations”. 

Today, the threat is no longer hypothetical. What’s at stake is our ability to organize, speak out, and pursue greater social justice in a nation that is still a democracy. 

Once the government can punish ideas, organizations, or communities it disagrees with, we are on a slippery slope to despotism.

The message from Trump's Washington is: beware, we’re coming for you. The threat is not just to the big or visible organizations — it’s to every citizen, every cause, every movement that dares to challenge power. We must not succumb to this fear. Our role at the Prospect is to report, expose, explain, and inspire.
