Congress is on the brink of a disastrous deal—and millions of Americans’ health care is being put at risk right now. As the shutdown stretches into its second week, Democrats are holding the line, and refusing to pass a budget deal that doesn’t fully restore Medicaid cuts or extend the life-saving Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies so many families rely on.
John, this isn’t just politics: The outcome will mean the difference between access to care and financial hardship for millions. Will you call your senator to encourage them to hold their vote, to hold the line on our health care?
Republican leaders want a stopgap that will reopen the government, but their plan would leave hospitals, clinics, and families dangerously exposed, doing nothing to safeguard Medicaid or lower premiums. Democrats are demanding a real solution to this crisis—not a backroom fix that leaves patients paying more and vulnerable communities out in the cold. And Republicans should join them to fix the healthcare crisis we're facing because of their actions.
If Congress fails to pass a comprehensive bill on health care, ACA enrollees could see their premiums double or triple, or they could lose coverage altogether, and Medicaid patients would suffer from cutbacks just as open enrollment begins. Hospitals and clinics already struggling from earlier budget cuts could be forced to scale back or close.
Tell your senator: No deal without the restoration of Medicaid funding, extended ACA support, and a real commitment to putting health over politics.
