A note from from Mayor Brian Turnbull...
** NORTHVILLIANS,
------------------------------------------------------------
Happy post-Fourth of July! As we engage in a (pandemic-related) summer, I thought I’d reflect on what our independence really means after a weekend of celebrating the birth of our nation.
Independence & Freedom – That’s what we’ve defended and fought for the last 244 years. As the Declaration of Independence states, ”We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal … with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. This is for ALL Americans equally. Never has this been so important to remember, especially in these times that cry out for national unity, justice and anti-racism action.
Thinking further on last weekend’s holiday, it’s important to concentrate on the “WE”. We are stronger together, not only as a nation but as the City of Northville – we are showing that now with all the support for our new downtown social district. On a larger scale, we make things happen because of our Independence & Freedom – sometimes described as “precious & fragile” – but I think it’s more like a foundation of rock … for our country, our town & our lives.
As we battle COVID-19, help others by masking up, maintain that social distance, and most importantly, reach out to those in need – our local Civic Concern, our Seniors, Youth, businesses, and especially family & friends.
Highlights:
COVID-19
* On July 1, the governor shut down indoor bar service for most of Michigan (for venues with less than 70% food-related sales).
* COVID-19: This is a novel virus (meaning it’s unique) – Northville has had 49 cases/7 fatalities. Michigan 73K/6.3K & the Nation 3.0M/129K. Testing & contact tracing continues. We can’t drop our guard now ... continue to Mask up, wash hands & adhere to social distance policies.
* In greater Wayne County, 9.8% of the Covid-19 cases have come from nursing homes, but over 37% of the deaths have been nursing home patients.
* Additionally, most of the County’s confirmed cases have been in the age range of 50-59 yrs. old (totaling 2,000), but the majority of deaths are over 80 years old (600), with 56% of cases as female victims.
OTHER
* We continue to transition to a “New Norm,” as it relates to our work, socializing & spacing. My commitment continues to keep you connected & safe, while having open communication.
* The Floor Area Ratio (FAR) motion recommended by the Planning Commission @ .36 is moving to City Council this month (meeting July 20^th).
* Excuse our dust – 14 City Road Projects are underway, surface lots being redone, and other projects that will ultimately make travel around town easier and more comfortable.
* City Hall opened Monday, July 6^th - a big THANK YOU goes to all our City employees for all they’ve done through this pandemic remotely. Also, Special thanks go to those that have responded to storm damage activities & also all the DPW runs for our water utilities.
* I continue to thank all those who have shared their time & talents in these unprecedented times – now it’s time to move forward intelligently and together into our future.
Enjoy your summer in the Ville & stroll Ford Field and the Mill Race Village. Incidentally, it was my honor to officiate a marriage ceremony at the gazebo this week, what a wonderful setting for marriage vows. So get out there and experience our downtown, you’ll love it!
Be safe, and continue to Keep that Northville Faith!
Stay #NorthvilleStrong!
