Hi friend,
I want to draw your attention to some big news today concerning the redistricting fight in Indiana.
For months, Donald Trump and JD Vance have been pressuring Republican lawmakers to redraw congressional maps – not to make elections fairer, but to make them impossible for Democrats to win. They are openly pushing for a “9-0” map in which the outcome of all House races is effectively decided before a vote is even cast.
But something remarkable has happened: or to be more accurate, nothing has happened, which is remarkable! We’re talking about Indiana, a very conservative state, and yet the GOP supermajority in the state assembly has not done what Trump has demanded. The reason is simple: they actually understand that it would be wrong.
A few weeks ago, I stood in the atrium of the Indiana statehouse and addressed hundreds of Hoosiers who showed up to demand fair maps and a fair process. It was one of those moments that recharges your confidence in democracy and in your fellow citizens – seeing people come together, raise their voice, and shape their own future.
Now, JD Vance is visiting personally to try to force their hand. That tells us something important, and encouraging: our pressure is working.
This is the kind of thing that shows how hope can be the consequence of action, more than its cause. Political hope in our moment isn’t about optimism in spite of the circumstances, it’s about the courage but the determination to change them. Every time you speak up, organize, or chip in to help keep fighting for fair elections, you’re generating hope.
I’ll keep doing my part to speak out and stand up for democracy wherever it’s under threat, and if you’re with me, I hope you consider making a contribution to Win the Era today:
