There’s nothing inherently wrong with voters spreading their support across multiple parties. People in different parts of the country have different priorities, and faith in the two main establishment parties has completely collapsed. It’s natural that voters would turn to the Greens, Lib Dems, SNP, Plaid Cymru, and yes, even Reform UK.
The problem is that this diversity is being squeezed through the narrowest possible funnel: First-Past-The-Post. The more multipolar our politics becomes, the less proportional our democracy will be. The less our votes actually matter.
If this trend continues, British elections could become a volatile democratic lottery where one party takes all the power after splitting the vote with four others. Right now, that party looks like Reform UK.
The electorate is looking for a more diverse politics. One where everyone’s voice counts, not just those who support one of five parties with a slight advantage.
This is another sign that our system is well overdue for a reset. We’ve got time now – barely – and if this Government can finally get the National Commission for Electoral Reform (NCER) off the ground, we can start the difficult but necessary task of picking an election system that’s actually fit for purpose.
We’ve already made massive gains in Parliament and beyond. The APPG for Fair Elections (the largest APPG in Parliament), Open Britain, Fair Vote UK and our allies across the democracy sector are making a huge splash.
If you believe Britain deserves a democracy where every vote counts, please chip in today. Your support will help us keep the pressure on Parliament, grow the campaign in communities across the country, and make fair votes impossible to ignore.
