Friend, ICE is arresting the very people who hold our communities together. Under the Trump administration, longtime community members and essential workers — those who care for loved ones, save lives, and protect our homes — are being detained, and in many cases, deported. These are not isolated incidents. They are part of an alarming pattern: Nicolle Orozco Forero, a childcare provider for children with disabilities in Seattle, was detained by ICE during a routine immigration appointment — leaving families without care and her seriously ill son without access to critical medical treatment. In August, two firefighters in Washington were detained by ICE while they were actively battling the largest fire in the state at the time. At least one of the firefighters has a pending application for a U-visa, intended to help people who assisted law enforcement with investigations of serious crimes. Amanda Trebach, an ICU nurse and community activist in Los Angeles, was arrested by masked agents last month. “They took me into an unmarked vehicle. They did not read me my rights. They didn’t tell me where I was going.” (Source: Democracy Now) And in September, 475 workers were taken into ICE custody at a Hyundai manufacturing site in Georgia — now the largest single-site immigration raid in U.S. history. Many of those detained had valid visas to perform specialized tasks critical to the facility’s construction. Across the country, ICE is going after anyone who they think looks or sounds like an immigrant. Armed agents, often wearing masks and unidentified, are brutalizing and disappearing longstanding members of our communities. These indiscriminate arrests and raids destabilize our neighborhoods, leaving people afraid to seek medical care, call 911 in emergencies, or send their children to school. This was never about “safety” — it’s about meeting exorbitant arrest quotas to intentionally tear communities apart.
