Standing Up for NY-15

Weekly Update

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As the government shutdown continues, I know how deeply this uncertainty weighs on families across the Bronx. Behind the headlines are real people, federal workers missing paychecks, parents worrying about nutrition and housing assistance, and seniors anxious about their benefits. I’m continuing to push for a bipartisan solution in Washington that restores government operations and protects essential services for those who need them most. In the meantime, my office remains open and ready to help Bronx residents connect with the resources and agencies they rely on every day.

I joined Public Health Solutions, the largest WIC provider in New York, for a press conference this week calling on Republicans to reopen the government and fully fund WIC. WIC, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, is a federal nutrition program that provides nutritious foods to nearly 7 million pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to 5 years old, supporting 40% of America’s infants. A shutdown in Washington has real consequences here at home, threatening the nutrition and healthy development of children across our nation.

I also cosponsored H.R. 5705, which would authorize the federal government to reimburse states for funds they’ve used to keep the WIC program operating during a federal government shutdown. By backing this bill, I’m working to ensure that mothers and children don’t lose critical nutrition support just because of budget gridlock.

I was honored to join the NAACP Williamsbridge Branch at their 67th Anniversary Gala, recognizing decades of tireless work toward justice, equality, and community empowerment in the Bronx.

I was proud to attend the Avril Show Prayer Breakfast, a powerful gathering of prayer, reflection, and unity. Events like these remind us of the strength we find in community and shared purpose.

I toured the Pelham Parkway Houses and had the chance to listen directly to residents about their concerns. It’s crucial to hear from the community to understand the challenges they face and work together toward real solutions.

I visited the University of Mount Saint Vincent, a federally recognized Hispanic-Serving Institution where more than a quarter of undergraduates identify as Hispanic or Latino. Thank you to President Susan Burns for hosting, to our student guide Richie for the wonderful tour, and to the Student Government Association for an engaging and insightful conversation.

Community Institution of the Week: St. Luke’s Episcopal Church

For more than a century, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Williamsbridge has stood as a pillar of faith, service, and community in the Bronx. Founded in 1914 in the living room of Mr. and Mrs. William Whitty, the church has grown into a vibrant congregation that lives its faith through action, from building affordable senior housing to supporting youth ministries and outreach. I’m proud to honor St. Luke’s clergy, leaders, and parishioners for their enduring commitment to lifting up our borough and being a beacon of hope for generations.

The Bronx deserves a government that works for the people, not political brinkmanship that puts families at risk. I will continue fighting to reopen the government, protect critical programs, and ensure that our community’s needs are never treated as bargaining chips. My office will stay open throughout this shutdown to assist residents and connect you with available resources. If you or someone you know needs help navigating federal services, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely,
