We’ve recognised inspiring residents at the 2025 Nottingham Awards, sharing new images from the £20m Bulwell regeneration project, and highlighting national award shortlists for our beautiful Green Heart.

And as we mark World Mental Health Day, we’re encouraging everyone to take a moment for their wellbeing, whether that’s a walk in one of our city’s parks or taking 10 minutes to read and relax.

Nottingham Awards
Nottingham’s community heroes honoured at 2025 Nottingham Awards

Nottingham’s inspiring community champions were celebrated this week at the 2025 Nottingham Awards, held alongside the traditional Goose Fair Dinner at the National Ice Centre.

Now in its twelfth year, the annual awards honour people who make an outstanding contribution to life in the city – from community leaders and educators to young people driving change.

Speaking at the event, Councillor Neghat Khan, Leader of Nottingham City Council, said: “The Nottingham Awards are a celebration of the people who make this city what it is – warm, generous, creative and resilient.

“Each of tonight’s winners has gone above and beyond to support others, inspire their communities and make Nottingham a better place for everyone. It was a privilege to recognise their achievements in front of so many of our partners and friends.”

Take 10 to Read - World Mental Health Day
?? Take 10 to Read this World Mental Health Day

Reading isn’t just good for the mind — it’s good for your mental health too.

Taking just ten minutes out of your day to read can help you relax, boost your mood, and escape the pressures of everyday life.

This World Mental Health Day, we’re joining the hashtag#Take10ToRead [ [link removed] ] campaign and encouraging everyone to take 10 minutes to read at 10am — or whenever works best for you!

Whether it’s a book, magazine, article, or poem, those 10 minutes can make a big difference.

By taking part, you’ll also inspire the next generation — because children who see adults enjoying reading are more likely to become readers themselves.

Green Heart
Award short-listings have city-centre green space at their heart

Nottingham’s popular Green Heart is at the centre of two national award nominations.

The city-centre space formed a key part of successful award submissions in the Architects’ Journal (AJ) Architect Awards 2025 and the Pro Landscaper Sustainability and Diversity Awards 2025.

Both have now been shortlisted in the "Landscape and Public Realm Project" and "Local Authority/Council" categories respectively. The former will be announced at the end of November while the latter will be decided at a ceremony tomorrow evening (7 October).

Judges from the AJ Awards were recently in Nottingham to be taken on site visit of the wider Broad Marsh area, which has undergone a major transformation in the past few years.

As well as the Green Heart, which officially opened in September 2024, Nottingham City Council has also opened a new Central Library and Broad Marsh bus station and car park. Nearby Collin Street has been turned from a traffic-choked, three-lane road into a quiet pedestrianised space with children’s play area.

Fly-Tipping
Crackdown as fly-tipping costs Council additional £300k in just three months

Nottingham City Council is stepping up its efforts to tackle the growing problem of fly-tipping, which is blighting neighbourhoods and costing the city hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Since July, four additional cleansing teams have been working alongside regular crews, including into the evenings, to clear fly-tipped waste from our streets. In just a few months, they have removed over 198 tonnes of dumped rubbish – costing the Council over £300,000.

Most residents are doing the right thing and disposing of their waste responsibly, but the small number who don’t are spoiling our neighbourhoods – and leaving everyone else to foot the bill.

Fly-tipping is not only anti-social, but also illegal – offenders risk a Fixed Penalty Notice of up to £400.

Latest on Nottingham's new walking and cycling bridge

Last week, partners including the funders of our bridge project, the Department for Transport, visited the riverside where the 87 metre, 175 tonne bridge is awaiting being lifted into place.

A huge 80metre tall crane will lift the bridge into place this November. Nottingham City Council will confirm areas that the public would be able to see the bridge lift. It is expected that the entire bridge lift process will take at several hours, and Nottingham City Council and Balfour Beatty will share pictures and videos of the bridge lift once it is complete.
