No, Mr. President. Learning the truth about America’s history of slavery is not corrosive. What was corrosive was the ideology that sought to justify slavery in the first place.
One of the most powerful reminders of that truth is the photograph known as “The Scourged Back,” taken in 1863. It shows the scarred back of an enslaved man named Peter Gordon, whose wounds came from brutal whippings before he escaped. That photograph shocked the nation and shifted public opinion against slavery.
The Trump administration doesn’t want you to see it.
As a former teacher, I know history is not up for debate. It is our duty to confront it honestly, to learn from it, and to teach it to future generations. We know the dangers of what happens when we deny, distort, or erase the past.
That’s why I raise my voice -- because I know what’s at stake. What we’re witnessing is not just an attack on history, but a deliberate attempt to control what Americans know, to block access to education, and to bury the truth.
Our fight for justice, equality, and democracy has never been more urgent. Together, we can defeat Trump and his extremist allies at every level, but it will take nonstop organizing, mobilizing, and refusing to stay silent.
