Dear John,

More than 75 percent of people around the world identify

as religious believers, yet countless individuals continue to face persecution for their beliefs.

At Freedom House, we've always understood that protecting the right to worship, or not to worship, is essential to upholding human rights and civil liberties in any society. We've also seen global religious freedom decline by 5 percent over the last 19 years, according to Freedom in the World

. When a regime outlaws religious expression or forces its favored religion on the population, it is not only attacking people's genuine faith and conscience. It is also assaulting one of the fundamental freedoms that undergird a fair, just, and peaceful national and global community.

That's why we have long stood with those facing religious persecution. Take the case of an elderly man in South Asia who was unjustly imprisoned for blasphemy. His only real "crime" was belonging to a religious minority group that the government disfavored. He had no family, income, or identification documents, and no one to advocate on his behalf. Without support, he remained in prison for years—until our team learned of his case and secured a lawyer, who ultimately won his freedom.

Freedom House has provided support to some of the most vulnerable people being targeted for their beliefs in more than 50 countries, offering a range of critical assistance—from medical aid and legal representation to prison visits. Our work has touched over 14,000 people and families whose loved ones were persecuted for their beliefs.

Now we are asking you to join us. Recent US government cuts

and reductions in foreign aid have hampered our ability to sustain this and other lifesaving work, and we urgently need your support.
