Franson Banner
Good morning!
I hope you have had a great start to fall, now that the weather is starting to line up with the calendar months. I am in the midst of another busy week on the road, this time touring Capital Investment projects in Northeastern Minnesota. Thanks for taking the time to read and engage, it's an honor to represent you!
Solemn Remembrance of October 7th
This week marks the second anniversary of the October 7th attacks on Israel, a day that claimed the lives of innocent civilians and forever changed countless families and communities. We remember those who were lost, those still suffering, and the brave individuals who responded in the face of unimaginable violence. As we reflect on that tragic day, we stand with our allies in Israel and continue to pray for peace, security, and the protection of innocent life.
It was especially disheartening to see hateful graffiti appear on the anniversary at Temple Israel in Minneapolis. Vandals spray-painted antisemitic messages [ [link removed] ] and references to “Oct. 7” on the synagogue’s exterior in the early morning hours, an act now under investigation as a hate crime. Law enforcement has increased patrols and is working with federal authorities to find those responsible. Incidents like this are a painful reminder that antisemitism is still very real, and we must stand united in condemning hate and supporting our Jewish neighbors.
There has been a lot of noise and division in the news surrounding the ongoing conflict, with strong opinions coming from every side. In the midst of it, President Trump and his administration have continued diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire and bring an end to the violence. While recent news signals that a ceasefire may be coming soon, the focus on negotiation and de-escalation remains critical to protecting innocent lives and creating the conditions for long-term stability in the region.

Special Session Update
In an interesting turn of events, Governor Walz quietly announced that he will not call a special session to pass gun control legislation without an agreement in place in advance. Previously, he was adamant that he would call legislators to the Capitol regardless of whether an agreement was in place, which was a bizarre stance to take. Rather than taking accountability for jumping the gun on calling the special session, it seems he may be shirking responsibility and placing the blame on stalled agreements. If anything changes, I will let you know, but this issue will be addressed one way or another - even if that means waiting until next session begins in February.
Student Opportunities at the Capitol
I want to take another opportunity to highlight internship/page opportunities for high school and undergraduate students at the Capitol as the deadlines to apply approach quickly! Check out the links below for more details.
*High School Page Program*
The Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page Program [ [link removed] ] gives juniors the chance to spend a week at the Capitol learning about the legislative process. Students meet with legislators, observe committee hearings and floor sessions, and gain firsthand experience with how ideas become law. Applications for the upcoming session are now open, and I encourage interested students to apply.
*Undergraduate Internship Program*
College students can also get involved through the Minnesota House Undergraduate Internship Program [ [link removed] ]. Interns work directly with legislative offices, assist with research and communications, and learn how policy decisions are made. This program provides valuable experience for students interested in government, law, or public service. Applications are also open now, and I encourage students to consider applying.
These programs are competitive and great to experience our state legislature. Keep them in mind as you consider your plans for the spring semester!
