Dear friends,
They can't wait. When it comes to COVID-19, people in prisons are among our most vulnerable. At FAMM, we're saying this: Keep them safe or send them home.
Now more than ever, FAMM is advocating policies that will reduce the prison population and help especially at-risk prisoners apply for compassionate release. Will you make a contribution to help us? https://secure.everyaction.com/UCT_4puDKkCSCL2maz23eQ2
Social distancing is impossible in prisons and jails, where people are confined to closet-like cells, share personal items, and have limited access to soap and protective equipment. In the past month alone, the number of known infections among people in prison has doubled to more than 68,000 cases.
Yet our officials are doing little to get people out of harm's way. Testing rates remain dangerously low, and many incarcerated people are elderly or immunocompromised, making them particularly at-risk of contracting coronavirus.
FAMM has placed more than 1,100 of these especially vulnerable prisoners with federal public defenders or pro-bono attorneys to help them file for compassionate release. Hundreds have been sent home, but there are thousands more waiting.
If we want to stop the spread of this virus, we have to reduce the prison population. With your help, we can continue this fight. Keep them safe or send them home. Please make a gift today. https://secure.everyaction.com/UCT_4puDKkCSCL2maz23eQ2
Sincerely,
Kevin Ring
