Breaking: Letitia James indicted on bank fraud charge

New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted by a federal grand jury in Virginia’s Eastern District on a single count of bank fraud, following a referral from federal housing regulator Bill Pulte who alleged she “falsified records” to obtain favorable home loans for a Norfolk, Virginia property she claimed as her “principal residence” in 2023.

  • Allegations of loan fraud and misrepresentation: Pulte claimed James committed multiple offenses including wire fraud, mail fraud, and false statements to financial institutions, also alleging she misclassified her Brooklyn brownstone as having four units instead of five to potentially secure more favorable loan terms on both properties, though James has called the allegations “baseless” and said she purchased the Virginia home with her niece who lives there.

  • Political context and other charges: Democrat NY Gov. Kathy Hochul called the indictment “weaponization of the Justice Department,” occurring after James won a $355 million civil judgment against Trump’s organization last year, with the FHFA head making similar mortgage fraud accusations against Sen. Adam Schiff and James Comey being indicted in the same Virginia district on September 25.

University pushes through TPUSA chapter approval despite student gov’t pushback

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga administration overruled its student government’s vote to block students from establishing a Turning Point USA chapter, with the Dean of Students’ Office determining the group is approved as a Registered Student Organization.

  • Kirk assassination context: The student government had voted against the chapter whose founder Charlie Kirk, 31, was shot and killed on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University during his “American Comeback Tour,” adding emotional weight to the controversy.

  • Legal threat prompted reversal: Trial lawyer Robert Barnes publicly threatened to sue the school on behalf of students after the initial rejection based on alleged “hate speech” concerns, receiving support from Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, which Barnes credited as “the gamechanger” leading to approval.

  • Part of broader pattern: The UTC decision follows recent controversies involving TPUSA chapters at other universities including Rutgers, where students have accused administrators and peers of political bias against conservative groups, with the university clarifying that “recognition of student organizations is determined by the UTC Dean of Students and Chancellor” regardless of student government opinions.

Climate activist accused of Palisades Fire arson

Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, a Florida man who regularly posted climate change alarmist content and anti-Trump messages on social media, is accused of starting the Palisades Fire on January 1 that killed 12 people, burned nearly 24,000 acres, destroyed over 7,000 structures, and caused approximately $150 billion in damages.

  • Ironic social media history: Rinderknecht’s Facebook page featured posts about global warming causing wildfires, climate apocalypses, pro-vegan content, and articles like “Climate Change Will Force a New American Migration” with thumbnails showing California wildfires—eerily similar to the destruction he allegedly created himself.

  • Disturbing behavior and evidence: Prosecutors allege Rinderknecht hiked to hills above Los Angeles to start the brushfire, filmed the blaze, reported it to authorities, returned to watch firefighters battle it, created AI-generated images of burning cities, and had previously threatened to burn down his sister’s house before his arrest.
