On May 24, 2022, Robb Elementary School experienced one of the worst shootings in American history. A tragic event that took the lives of nineteen 3rd and 4th graders and two school teachers. Since 1999 more than 383,000 students have experienced gun violence at school.
Jacklyn “Jackie” Jaylen Cazares, Uziyah “Uzi” Garcia, Maite Yuleana Rodriguez, Alexandria Aniyah Rubio and Tess Marie Mata were just some of the young students that lost their lives on May 24, 2022 during the shooting. These were young kids that filled the rooms they were in with laughter and already had plans for their future. Jackie wanted to be a veterinarian. Uzi dreamed of becoming a youtuber. Maite wanted to go to Texas A&M and study Marine Biology. Tess knew she wanted to be a Bobcat at Texas State. Alexandria wanted to be a lawyer. None of them was older than 10 years old with big dreams ahead.
Schools should be a place where you are safe and protected to learn and make friends. That day an 18 year old took their dreams, with two legally purchased assault rifles. No place will feel truly safe until laws change.
