John —

We’re nine days into the government shutdown.

You might be wondering: How is the president using his time to try to bring an end to the pain he is inflicting on the American people?

→ He’s spent time addressing hundreds of generals and admirals, telling them that they need to train in American cities and consider the American people in those cities as “the enemy within.”

→ He ordered a strike on another ship in the Caribbean — an action he did not have the authority to conduct.

→ He’s gone after American universities, in an effort to coerce these schools into following his agenda — or else, they’ll lose federal dollars.

→ He’s methodically punishing his enemies — threatening again to lay off thousands of people and cut billions in funding for vital programs. His focus is on money and programs in Blue states that didn’t vote for him.

→ He’s cancelling energy projects in California, which will directly drive up energy prices.

→ He's using your tax dollars to push out propaganda on government websites and using the emails of government employees without their permission.

→ He’s been trolling and posting on social media.

→ And of course, he’s been out on the golf course.

Normally, presidents try to minimize the harm of a government shutdown. They try to bring together the parties in Congress and end the shutdown.

But not Donald Trump. No, he is trying to maximize the harm — but only in certain parts of the country.

This kind of petty, vindictive politics is not new. But that doesn’t mean we have to accept this behavior as normal.

Meanwhile, Republicans are starting to panic, aware of the fact that millions of Americans are about to get giant increases to their health care insurance — and the public is going to be pissed. They have every right to be. This is entirely a crisis engineered entirely by Republicans to pay for their tax cuts for rich people.

We need to speak out, demand Republicans come to the table, address this health care crisis, and end this shutdown.

More soon from me,

Adam
