Avaya Must Not Abandon U.S. Call Center Workers
Share This Article:
This week, communications technology provider Avaya informed CWA that it plans to close its U.S. billing and customer service operations and send the work overseas. CWA represents customer service workers in Denver, Colo., and Oklahoma City, Okla. “The functions currently performed by our hourly billing and collections department workers will no longer be handled internally at Avaya or in the U.S.,” the company wrote in an e-mail to union officials.
“Avaya’s decision to abandon its U.S. customer service workers is outrageous and a violation of our collective bargaining agreement,” said CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. “Avaya counts on business from federal, state, and local government agencies; those public dollars should support jobs here in the United States. We will pursue all avenues available to us to enforce our contract and protect our members at Avaya.”
“Workers are fed up with being discarded by companies in the pursuit of profit,” said CWA Telecommunications and Technologies Vice President Lisa Bolton. “We have news for Avaya: you can’t push us around or ignore our collective bargaining agreement. We will fight for the respect we deserve and to continue to provide the high-quality service our customers expect.”
Piedmont Members Mobilize Before Mediation
Share This Article:
Last week, Piedmont Airlines passenger service and ramp workers seized an opportunity to let the company know it's time to pay Piedmont workers fairly. At an end-of-summer event sponsored by parent company American Airlines, Piedmont workers at CWA Local 2252 held signs demanding the company negotiate a strong contract that secures the wages members deserve. After two years, and with bargaining at a standstill, the bargaining team is preparing for the start of federal mediation later this month.

CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. Visits Video Game Members Ahead of Bargaining Session
Share This Article:
Last week, CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. met with members at the Activision Blizzard campus in Irvine, Calif., to celebrate the growing wave of video game workers organizing across the industry. During his visit, President Cummings emphasized the importance of building on this historic momentum by securing strong first contracts at Microsoft studios and beyond.
In a show of unity, President Cummings, along with over 100 game workers from other bargaining units at Activision Blizzard and Microsoft studios, joined the World of Warcraft Bargaining Committee for a solidarity walk ending at the location of the bargaining session. Cummings then attended the session in support of members’ fight for a fair collective bargaining agreement.
AFA-CWA Flight Attendant Runs for Congress
Share This Article:
AFA-CWA member Kaela Berg has officially announced her run for Congress! She has been an Endeavor AFA Flight Attendant for 22 years and is currently serving in the Minnesota House. As a state representative since 2021, Kaela has been a leading voice behind pro-union and working family legislation, including banning captive audience meetings and gaining unemployment benefits for striking workers. Both AFA-CWA and the CWA Minnesota State Council have endorsed Kaela, and if elected, she will be the first active Flight Attendant to serve in Congress.
“Kaela Berg is a true champion for working families,” said CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. “As an active Flight Attendant and union leader, she knows what working people can accomplish when they join together to improve their lives and their communities. As a legislator, she has helped make Minnesota a leader in worker empowerment. As a member of Congress, Kaela will bring working people together and deliver real solutions to the challenges we face.”
Kaela faces a tough primary and, if she wins, will enter a highly competitive general election. Fundraising will be critical. Click here to support Kaela in her historic run for Congress.
Everett NewsGuild Members Ratify Historic Contract
Share This Article:
Last week, journalists at the Everett Herald, members of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild (TNG-CWA Local 37082), ratified a historic first contract, winning stronger job protections, fair raises, and improved working conditions. This comes after members walked off the job for three days in 2024 due to illegal layoffs. Later, management attempted to tie raises to a drastic increase in workload, requiring reporters to publish two to three times more stories per day. Workers fought back by organizing a subscriber support campaign and threatening a boycott, ultimately winning guaranteed wage increases for everyone.
The tentative agreement reflects those fights and builds long-term stability for the staff. Highlights include improvements to the grievance and arbitration processes, worker protections against transfers, and remote work options.
“We’re so glad to finally get this contract over the finish line, and we couldn’t have done it without the help of the community and the Herald journalists who came before us,” said Will Geschke, a reporter at the Everett Herald.
Congratulations to the members of the Everett NewsGuild!
CWA Campus Workers Rally Against Campus Surveillance
Share This Article:
In early August, members of United Campus Workers-CWA Arizona (UCWAZ-CWA Local 7065) learned that the administration of the University of Arizona had contracted with Flock Safety to install approximately 54 Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) around the university’s campus. These ALPRs record license plate and vehicle information, which is then saved and shared nationally in an AI-driven database. University officials did not share information publicly about this contract or the presence of these ALPRs.
Data collected by Flock Safety systems has been used across the country by law enforcement officials for immigration-related searches. Instances of abuse of the system include the handcuffing of a 12-year-old due to a Flock Safety data error of a misread license plate, law enforcement officers using the system to stalk former romantic partners, and use of the data to track people traveling out of state to seek reproductive health care.
Multiple city governments have responded to their residents’ concerns by cancelling their Flock Safety contracts. UCWAZ-CWA members stand with other community and student groups requesting the university cancel its contract with Flock Safety and remove the ALPRs.

CWAers Stand Against FCC Chairman Carr’s Attacks on Free Speech
Share This Article:
CWAers and NABET-CWA President Charlie Braico (second from left) joined in silent protest with activists from Free Press at an open meeting of the Federal Communications Commission. Members stood firm against FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s weaponization of government power in efforts to silence President Donald Trump’s critics.
“This coordinated attack on our First Amendment rights by the Trump administration and by the media companies Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group has laid bare a simple truth: our democracy cannot afford to compromise on media consolidation,” said President Braico. “When we fight back against corporate consolidation of our local media stations, our union is fighting for freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the freedom of every worker who chooses to speak truth to power.”
Just Say “No” to Tyrants

CWA has signed on as a proud partner for the No Kings national day of action on October 18.
Billionaires who have bought and bribed their way to power in Washington are working to dismantle our collective bargaining agreements and gut laws that protect our safety at work and workers’ ability to form unions.
The Trump administration has already shredded the union contracts of more than 1 million federal workers. They have left 17 million people without healthcare coverage and driven up insurance costs for all of us. They are deploying federal troops to American cities to intimidate peaceful protestors.
Their policies are designed to take power from the people, create more avenues for corporations to exploit workers, and transfer trillions of dollars from programs that benefit working people, retirees, and children into tax cuts for the super-rich.
This is not what we want. This is not what the majority of Americans want.
We want better, cheaper healthcare. We want to improve Social Security and Medicare so they will be there when we are ready to retire. We want to fix our tax system so that the obscenely rich pay what they should, and corporations aren’t rewarded for sending jobs overseas. We want to be free to join unions and bargain for the wages and benefits that we deserve.
Our unity is powerful.
On October 18, millions of working people will stand together to show that we will not be intimidated.
