Donald Trump just said out loud what authoritarians only hint at: that elected Democratic leaders should be thrown in jail for refusing to carry out his political agenda.
In a Fox News interview, Trump claimed that the Mayor of Chicago and the Governor of Illinois should be “jailed” for not doing enough to “protect ICE officers”. Those are the President of the United States’ words.
This isn’t about law enforcement. This is blatantly about political revenge.
Trump is escalating things fast. He’s threatening to jail mayors, governors, judges, and anyone else who doesn’t fall in line with his authoritarian agenda. And with every comment like this, he normalizes the idea that dissent is a crime.
