John --

Forward is Fighting for the Voice of Voters!

The Polelle v. Florida case before the Supreme Court challenges whether states can bar independents from voting in primaries unless they register with a major party. The Forward Party is proud to stand alongside the Florida Forward Party, Open Primaries, the Independent Voter Project, and so many others in supporting the petition with this amicus brief  because it goes to the heart of what Forward stands for: fair representation and a voice for every voter.

The Forward Party is fighting for a system where the rules are fair, leaders answer to all their voters (not just party insiders), and primaries don’t reward the extremes.  Partisan gerrymandering and closed primaries are two of the main tools the major parties use to protect their turf. By drawing districts to lock in safe seats and shutting independents out of primaries, they silence the majority of U.S. voters and tighten their grip on power.

The Supreme Court’s decision in Polelle v. Florida could reshape the rules of our democracy and determine whether millions of independents are allowed full participation in elections. For the 40% of Americans who identify as independents, the stakes are huge. In Florida, where many districts are effectively decided in primaries, this exclusion forces voters to affiliate or be shut out of the process entirely. Closed primaries turn millions of citizens into second-class participants in elections they fund, silencing voices outside the duopoly.

We exist to fix what’s broken in our politics, including closed primaries and partisan gerrymandering. Our candidates pledge to fight to strengthen democracy and elevate the voters’ voice. Make no mistake - no matter how it couches the decision, the Supreme Court is deciding whether you get a say in your elected officials. With gerrymandering and closed primaries, it's party leadership who currently gets to decide on our representatives.
