Targeted Help

What to Know: The CARES Act has provided funds to Gov. Greg Abbott to help Texas students who are impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The TPPF Take: One purpose of those funds is to allow special-needs students to get additional services through micro-grants at the governor’s discretion. Another purpose is to enhance virtual learning for all students.

“While all of us have been affected by the pandemic, students with disabilities have been particularly hard-hit,” says TPPF’s Ron Simmons. “These extra services can help ensure that these students don’t fall too far behind on their learning.”

Transparency

What to Know: Two friends in Texas were tested for COVID-19. One was billed $199. The other was billed $6,408.

The TPPF Take: Requiring hospitals and insurers to disclose rates and prices can reduce inflated health care costs and benefit all Americans.

“Health care consumers do not know what they’ll pay until after treatment occurs,” says TPPF’s David Balat. “As a result, providers can charge far more than if patients had pricing information to inform their treatment decisions before receiving care.”

Ruling in Favor of Freedom

What to Know: The Supreme Court has ruled that school choice programs can’t discriminated against religious schools.

The TPPF Take: The ruling is a win for religious freedom and school choice.

“Three Montana moms won a significant victory for their children—and others—at the U.S. Supreme Court last week,” says TPPF’s Stephanie Matthews. “The High Court ruled that the state’s ban on their use of public school scholarship funds at the school of their choice—which happened to be a religious school—was unconstitutional.”
