Desk of the Commissioner - October

Commissioner Lindsay

As Veterans Day approaches on Tuesday, November 11, we invite Minnesota’s more than 286,000 Veterans to reflect on the unique paths that led each of you to service. Every Veteran story is different, and together those stories form the rich tapestry of our state’s military heritage.

We are both diverse and similar in so many ways.

I am often quoted to say: “Veterans are people, too.” Veterans come from all walks of life, they represent urban and rural roots, enjoy a variety of interests, may be part of large or small families, and bring uniquely varied experiences from their military careers.

Veterans Day Celebration Marks 80 Years Since WWII’s End

Servicemember and child celebrate Veterans Day 2024

Communities across Minnesota and the nation will come together on Nov. 11 to honor the courage, sacrifice and enduring strength of our Veterans. It’s a day to reflect, remember and recognize generations of service—past and present—and to thank those who have worn the uniform with pride. For many, Veterans Day offers comfort and a deep sense of camaraderie rooted in shared experience.

This year marks a shift in Minnesota’s official Veterans Day celebration. For the first time, the event will move beyond the Twin Cities and head south to the National Guard Armory in Mankato. Hosted by the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA), the celebration will feature a powerful blend of remembrance and recognition, with a special focus on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

988 Boxes Provide Mental Health, Suicide Prevention Tools

Veterans Crisis Line: Diall 988 then 1

More than 140 American Legion posts recently received a box of goodies with a serious message: Veterans struggling with their mental health or who are in crisis should call 988 and then press 1 for support.

The outreach was the latest effort by the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) Suicide Prevention team as they strive to educate communities and support Veterans and their families during challenging times. Minnesota loses about 100 Veterans every year to suicide, and MDVA is working to address this tragedy and decrease that number.

Survey Seeks Input on Suicide Prevention

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) wants to better understand what’s working and what can be improved when it comes to supporting the mental health and well-being of our Service Members, Veterans and their Families (SMVF).

MDVA is partnering with Wilder Research to conduct a survey of SMVF. We invite you to take a few minutes to complete the survey. Your input will help shape the future of suicide prevention efforts across Minnesota.

This survey is focused on the experiences and perspectives of  SMVF. Your voice is essential.

All responses are confidential and will directly inform recommendations to the Minnesota Legislature and MDVA.

Thank you for helping us build a stronger, more responsive support system for all who have served and their families.
