Stephen Miller, Trump’s Rasputin-like advisor, is openly calling for an authoritarian state. These are just a few recent quotes from him that will make your skin crawl: 

• On the courts not agreeing with Trump: “The courts aren’t just at war with the executive branch. The courts are at war … with the legislative branch as well too.” “Today’s judicial ruling is one of the most egregious and thunderous violations of constitutional order we have ever seen … nullify the 2024 election by fiat.” “Yet another example of legal insurrection.”

• On Democrats: “There is a large and growing movement of leftwing terrorism in this country … And it is shielded by far-left Democrat judges, prosecutors and attorneys general. The only remedy is to use legitimate state power to dismantle terrorism and terror networks.”

• On the Rule of Law: “The privilege of the writ of habeas corpus can be suspended in a time of invasion. So, to say that’s an option we’re actively looking at … a lot of it depends on whether the courts do the right thing or not.”

The same old political games and tired messaging tactics aren’t going to cut it. We need leadership in Washington that can stand up to creeps like Stephen Miller and his authoritarian buddies. 

I have done exactly that. For nearly half a decade, I worked to chase down and hold accountable a war criminal of Chile’s authoritarian right-wing leader Pinochet who tortured and murdered political opponents. We took that war criminal to court, held him accountable, and built a basis for deporting him to face criminal charges. 

What we need now are leaders who know what it is like to face down authoritarians. Because that is exactly what this moment requires.
