FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Karma Lombard, Office Manager October 9, 2025 (207) 624-8540 Maine Has the Nation’s Lowest Auto Insurance Premiums, According to NAIC Report AUGUSTA – Maine drivers have the lowest average premium rates in the United States, according to a report from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). The report, which compiled data from 2023, shows that Maine drivers paid an average total annual premium of $926. In contrast, the average total premium nationwide was $1,438 per year, 55% higher than Maine. Maine Insurance Superintendent Bob Carey stated, “It is gratifying to see Maine lead the country in low auto insurance premiums, combined with the lowest percentage of uninsured drivers and strong minimum liability requirements that help keep Maine drivers safe and secure.” Most recently, from August 2024 through July 2025, the Bureau approved rate increases that averaged less than 4% for personal auto insurance. Carey noted that these low rates reflect that Maine has a competitive insurance market with a large number of insurers offering coverage at competitive rates. In addition to comparatively lower premiums, Maine has the lowest percentage of uninsured drivers in the United States. The Insurance Information Institute (III) estimates that only 5.7% of Maine drivers are uninsured, based on its 2023 data. In most states, more than 10% of drivers do not have insurance. Maine’s low premium rates are also impressive given that Maine’s minimum liability coverage requirements are among the strongest compared to most other states. Maine requires “50/100/25” coverage, which means a personal auto insurance policy must provide coverage of at least $50,000 per person for bodily injury or death, $100,000 per accident for bodily injury or death to more than one person, and $25,000 for damage to property. Many drivers carry higher limits than these minimums. The NAIC report can be found here: NAIC Auto Insurance Supplement.
