John, how many times have you heard that a candidate is running to “shake up Washington?”
I know I don’t want to throw my support behind people who just talk the talk. That’s how you end up with representatives like Rep. Rob Bresnahan, who won a tight race on the promise he would lead the charge against congressional stock trading. Broken Promise Bresnahan has since become one of the most notorious traders in Congress.
So I won’t ever ask you to support anyone who hasn’t also walked the walk — with work experience that proves both a higher ethical standard and the political know-how to work across the aisle.
That’s why, with 435 House races and 37 Senate races happening next year, we have only endorsed three candidates so far. I’d like for you to meet them today:
Paige “Against The Machine” Cognetti currently serves as the mayor of Scranton, and previously worked for the Pennsylvania Auditor General, the chief fiscal watchdog of the state, with a record of cracking down hard on fraudsters who targeted school districts and elder care providers. (As a bonus, she’s running to unseat Broken Promise Bresnahan!)
Dan Schwartz got his start as a consumer watchdog after the 2008 financial crisis, then worked with state banking regulators across the country and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for well over a decade. His commitment to taking down financial abuse and subject area expertise make him an invaluable asset to our movement.
Oliver Larkin has organized across the country, from New Hampshire to Kansas, to hear from working people before returning to his own neighborhood in South Florida. He specializes in holding Big Tech accountable, data privacy, and democracy reform, which are all helpful in the fight to ban congressional stock trading.
I’m proud to say that Ban The Trade is supporting these three candidates, and that’s why I’m asking you to make a $7 recurring contribution to our organization today. By chipping in, you support both parts of our fight: our pressure campaign on current members of Congress to pass a ban on congressional stock trading, and our election project to support candidates who live up to our principles.
As debate heats up again, and more people prepare to challenge the most notorious stock traders in Congress, a recurring contribution fuels our fight for months to come. Please, start one today:
Working hard for a less corrupt future,
