CUP OF JOE

Newsletter

This week started in Iowa and ended in California.

I organized a “Cup of Joe on the Issues” event in Corning, ran in a parade in Vinton, talked to local Democratic groups across Iowa, held a town hall at Fox Brewing in West Des Moines and spoke at the Frank LaMere Native American Presidential Forum and the Iowa AFL-CIO Convention. I then flew to San Francisco to speak at the Democratic National Committee’s summer meeting, where I shared my thoughts on the candidate and the message we need to win in 2020.

And this coming week, I’ll be the only Democratic Presidential candidate in Iowa!

Not your average Joe - Quartz

I was profiled in Quartz in a piece entitled “Not your average Joe… Meet the intriguing presidential candidate you haven’t seen on the debate stage”

The article said of me:

"You may not know Joe Sestak, though he is running for president of the United States. But wherever you’re from in the world, the Democratic candidate has likely been to, or at least seriously considered, your region of the globe. And he’d love to chat about it.

Sestak—call him Joe though, he insists—has been a congressman, a 3-star admiral in the Navy, a military adviser to former US president Bill Clinton, a college professor, a PhD student in political economy and government, a husband, a father, a wanderer, a global backpacker, and a long walker who crossed 422 miles of Pennsylvania by foot to meet with his constituents. He’s a progressive moderate who wants the US to resume its role as a global leader advancing 'the values-based world order from which we have retreated,' and a military man more inclined to diplomacy than warfare.”

Democratic National Committee

I spoke at the Democratic National Committee’s summer meeting, where I talked about why I’m uniquely qualified to be President, why I got into politics in the first place and why I’m running now.

I explained my message of accountability, and why I believe that those who led us into that disastrous war in Iraq and dismantled safeguards on Wall Street should be held accountable for their decisions. We need someone who will stand up for ordinary Americans and accept responsibility for deeds, and not just words.

AFL-CIO Iowa Convention

Trade unions are among the last organized forces fighting for working families in America. I’m proud to have had a 97% rating from the AFL-CIO during my time in Congress.

I spoke at the Iowa AFL-CIO Convention, where I shared thoughts about reforming OSHA, the minimum wage and protecting working families.

I was asked by Sarah Grossman at the Huffington Post about how I practice “self-care” - how I deal with the pressures of the campaign trail. I responded that I do an early morning run of about three miles every day - it is the most relaxing way to just think and enjoy myself while away from home. I am the only candidate in Iowa this coming week, according to the Des Moines Register. I’ll be marching in a parade, speaking at the Clay County Democrats Steak Fry, and talking to local Democratic Party groups in the 2nd District, in Winnebago County, in Story County and in Cerro Gordo County.

I’ll also be organizing three Cup of Joe on the Issues events - on education (in Muscatine), on agriculture and food (in Polk City) and on healthcare (in Riceville). Check out all my events here.
