Hi John,
At Climate Week NYC, over 100 countries announced new climate targets. The bad news – many just weren’t good enough.
The U.S. took a massive step back. Plans by big polluters like China fell far short. And the EU didn’t even confirm its target.1
We need to make sure that the upcoming COP30 in Brazil – the most important climate talks of the year – tackles this head-on. The gap between what’s promised and what’s needed must be smaller.
And here’s the thing, John – Indigenous leaders in Brazil are already showing what real climate leadership looks like. They’ve called for an end to fossil fuels, protection of their lands and forests, and support for clean energy.
Indigenous Peoples have defended the Amazon for centuries. They’ve been leading calls in Brazil for ambitious climate plans – especially from the countries that contribute the most to global heating.2
And they're not alone. Countries that have done the least to cause the climate crisis, like Pakistan and the Pacific Island of Palau, met the New York summit with bold plans.
As the host of this year’s COP, the Brazilian COP30 Presidency plays a key role in shaping the debate and its outcomes. They must rise to the occasion and lead the way.
No more excuses from rich countries. Brazil must listen to Indigenous leaders: push for a strong deal ending fossil fuels, funding a fair transition to renewables and give Indigenous Peoples a seat at the table.
Add your voice to their demands and show solidarity.
In solidarity,
Katrina for 350.org
