Dear Law Center supporters,
Over the past few weeks, Trump’s dangerous policies on homelessness have continued to wreak havoc on communities across the country. We must be clear that Trump is using his authoritarian takeover of cities to, in part, enact his anti-homeless agenda. Despite his misdirection and lies, we know the truth: the only true solutions to homelessness are housing and supportive services, not arrests, tickets, or sending armed soldiers and masked federal agents to terrorize neighborhoods and waste taxpayer money.

Protect homeless neighbors against ICE
Despite pushback from both the Governor of Illinois and the city's mayor, Trump’s plans to expand his authoritarian occupation into Chicago have begun, already with horrifying consequences. Last week, 20-30 masked agents arrived in unmarked minivans outside a Bronzeville homeless shelter and violently arrested four people[[link removed]], just one day after raiding an apartment building and arresting 37 people, including children.
As a reminder, our ICE Raids Resource Hub[[link removed]] includes a detailed guidance[[link removed]] for homeless shelters and service providers on how to respond to ICE, which now has a Spanish translation[[link removed]]. In response to the increasing federal takeovers, we have developed Know Your Rights
cards[[link removed]] specifically tailored for homeless neighbors.
Please report any interactions between homeless people and federal agents by emailing us at

Federal sweeps continue in Oregon
As part of Trump’s Executive Order[[link removed]] to make homelessness worse, a multi-agency effort to dismantle several homeless camps on federally owned land near La Pine was recently completed. Four homeless people were arrested.[[link removed]] This follows Trump’s chaotic Deschutes National Forest evictions[[link removed]] from earlier
this year.
Judge blocks HUD from ‘creating chaos’ over immigration and gender policies
In September, a federal court halted efforts to limit housing funding[[link removed]] to only jurisdictions complying with the Trump administration's agenda. We were honored to represent the National Alliance to End Homelessness along with Democracy Forward, ACLU of Rhode Island, and Lawyers Committee for Rhode Island in their lawsuit to temporarily block this ideology-driven move.

Utah Board Approves Massive Homeless Detention-Camp
Last week, Utah’s Homeless Services Board voted to move forward with plans to redirect money from housing to create a massive government-run homeless detention camp[[link removed]]. This isolated 1,300-bed detention center includes 300 locked beds and forced treatment. This is a direct result of Trump’s anti-homeless actions order and Utah’s enforcement of ineffective anti-homeless laws, inspired by the Cicero Institute's billionaires.
New Publication
We’re proud to share that our Youth Shelter and Housing Attorney John Salois has published an article in collaboration with Liz Harding at the Southern Legal Center for Youth: "Exploring Due Process Rights and Litigation Strategies for Homeless Youth Under Federal Law[[link removed]]." This piece dives deep into the constitutional and statutory rights of youth experiencing homelessness — and why ensuring due process matters when it comes to housing, stability, and justice.
