Right now, the United States Government is shut down, and families across the country are facing immediate pain:

* Essential services like food and safety inspections are slowing or stopping.
* Crucial healthcare support—including the tax credits that keep ACA premiums affordable for millions—is expiring, making costs skyrocket right before open enrollment.

This is unnecessary pain and chaos. And it’s a direct result of a hyper-partisan Washington where the margins are so slim that the most extreme voices hold veto power over essential functions. They refuse to govern, and American families pay the price.

The solution is not complicated for Democrats: We can only govern effectively if we win more seats in tough districts and states.

If we had more pragmatic Democrats—the kind that Win the Center is dedicated to supporting—in Congress, the extremists would be neutralized. The center would hold, and we would have the power to:

* Keep the Government Open: Pass funding bills on time and stop using the American people as bargaining chips.
* Protect Healthcare: Vote to extend essential subsidies and block the cuts that jeopardize Medicaid and the ACA for millions of working families.
* Secure Jobs and the Economy: Ensure that federal workers and contractors can rely on their paychecks, keeping our local economies stable.

The crisis of this government shutdown proves that the old strategy of writing off red states and purple districts is a failure. We must compete everywhere we can with candidates who are ready to build a broad coalition.
