Dear Green American,
Halloween was my favorite day as a kid. I looked forward to dressing up as a ghost or superhero and walking around the neighborhood with friends to collect as much candy as possible.
What I didn’t know then is that most chocolate comes from West Africa, where farmer poverty helps drive rampant child labor on cocoa plantations.
Thanks to Green Americans like you taking action over the past two decades joining the advocacy of cocoa farmers and their allies world worldwide, many major chocolate companies are finally starting to address poverty, deforestation, and child labor in cocoa.
But that progress is not happening fast enough. There are still an estimated 1.5 million children laboring in cocoa in the Ivory Coast and Ghana.
Luckily, there are responsible companies who already “raise the bar” when it comes to chocolate. They pay farmers fairly, work to protect forests and eliminate child labor, and protect farmers and communities from toxic pesticides.
This year, hand out minis and individually wrapped truffles from leaders Tony’s Chocolonely, Equal Exchange, and Alter Eco ([link removed]). I’ve sampled all these chocolates, and they are so good, you’ll want to order some for yourself!
Make sure to order them soon so they arrive in time for Halloween.
Thanks for all you do for a greener world.
