Both amendments to the Domestic Abuse Bill failed last night

Yesterday a major threat to unborn babies was averted in the House of Commons. We saw a complete pro-abortion failure. An attempt to hijack the Domestic Abuse Bill to decriminalise abortion and make DIY abortions permanent was defeated thanks to your hard lobbying over the past few days.
* Clause 29 in the Domestic Abuse Bill, which would have decriminalised abortion, was not selected by the Speaker.
* Clause 28, whic would have made DIY abortions permanent, was withdrawn at the last minute.

A big thank you to all those who acted quickly and contacted their MP. SPUC supporters were loud and clear in their message to MPs: abortion is not the solution to domestic abuse. Indeed, abortion is domestic abuse of the very worst kind.

In her speech last night, DUP MP Carla Lockhart quoted from someone who works with people experiencing domestic abuse in England:

“We work every day with women who experience domestic abuse. We see the way they are controlled and manipulated. To me, … [Clause 28] will only be making that worse. It will give abusers more power and more reason to keep the woman being abused at home, away from people who can really help them.”

SPUC truly cares about women. Your swift and powerful lobbying defeated the horrific Clause 28.


** Danger ahead

We won last night’s battle, but the war rages on. The government announced that it would launch a consultation on whether DIY home abortions should be made permanent after the pandemic.

This is extremely dangerous. No wonder BPAS, Britain’s biggest abortion provider, was rejoicing last night!

A consultation will be a vehicle for the Government to set out its plan to make DIY abortions permanent. A consultation will enable the government to go through the motion of listening to all views and then to rubber stamp its own agenda.


** We will raise our voices again
------------------------------------------------------------
But we will use the consultation to be a voice for voiceless unborn babies in our land. We will be a voice for abused and oppressed women.

We will raise our voices loud and clear once again in the forthcoming consultation. We will not remain silent. Lives are at stake.
