Last week in Alamosa, Colorado, ICE agents surrounded a car leaving the Alamosa County Courthouse to arrest the man driving the car. In the backseat was his wife and their 1-month old newborn baby.

ICE agents immediately drew their firearms as they approached the car, screaming at the driver. Then, an agent came from behind the vehicle and began banging on the window with a police baton, shattering the glass all over the man, the mother, and their newborn baby inside.

ICE used excessive force against this family immediately with no warning, no attempt at communication, and zero effort to de-escalate the situation—and it turns out that the mother and baby are, in fact, American citizens.

Imagine if this were you. Or, imagine this happened to someone you know. That man's immigration status does not make this right. And no mother or child should ever have to experience this kind of trauma and fear.

Yet, this is the reality of a law enforcement agency gone completely rogue and unaccountable. Every day, abuses like this are visited on people in America.

Just days ago, ICE went door to door in a Chicago apartment building in the middle of the night, dragged everyone out, and zip-tied their hands, including children.

Many swept up in this brutal regime are not criminals—and far too many are legally present in this country, are U.S. citizens, or are in the process of becoming citizens. 

We have to work together to stop this cruelty.

Trump has given ICE the green light to violate our civil rights, throw away due process, and engage in violent confrontations in cities and neighborhoods across America. 

Congress could restrain Trump and rein in ICE. But they won't—because the MAGA GOP controls the House and Senate. 

We can change that. Colorado is a top battleground for flipping the House. The work we do here can have an immense impact.

As Latinos and Independents turn away from Trump in disgust, we can work to win them back and build a formidable resistance that can sweep Republicans out of power.
