When people think about my job as Secretary of State, they think about elections, and that’s fair. I’m in the democracy business.
But democracy is about more than voting. It’s also about the freedom to speak, to disagree, to create, and to tell the truth, even when those in power don’t want to hear it.
That’s why the recent actions by the Trump Administration are so alarming. They’ve attacked the very foundation of free speech in this country:
– Firing the entire bipartisan board of the Kennedy Center because they didn’t like the plays and concerts being performed.
– Expelling reporters from press rooms for refusing to use the phrase “Gulf of America.”
– Threatening to cut billions in university funding unless the federal government can vet hiring and curriculum decisions.
This is not how a democracy behaves. It’s how an autocracy begins.
