John,
Artificial Intelligence (AI) could teach a beginner to make a biological weapon or even trigger a deadly pandemic – and that’s what the companies who make chatbots say!
Right now, a bill to help prevent such nightmare scenarios is on New York Governor Hochul’s desk, but a tiny bunch of tech oligarchs is lobbying to stop her from signing it into law.
The Responsible AI Safety and Education (RAISE) Act passed the New York State Legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support in June. Polls show 84% of New Yorkers also support the bill’s goals. Still, it’s not a done deal. Tech billionaires could sink the bill if we don’t raise our voices to counter their spin:
Ask Governor Hochul to sign the RAISE Act, because the risks for us all are just too much to leave it up to Big Tech.
The RAISE Act would make new rules for AI titans like Elon Musk's xAI, OpenAI, Google, and Meta – corporations training AI software with eye-watering amounts of computing power. Instead of making it up as they go, those “large developers” would be forced to take more care about catastrophic risks of AI, and would face serious fines if they break the rules.
Just in the last month, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and OpenAI’s Sam Altman have admitted that there’s an AI investment bubble. As the bubble threatens to burst, the pressure on AI companies to cut corners, cover-up mistakes, or ignore warnings, is only going to increase. We urgently need this law.
It’s not perfect, but no law is. The RAISE Act makes meaningful progress on AI safety, and would continue to build a state movement to properly govern AI in the absence of any federal legislation.
Ask the New York Governor to sign the RAISE Act into law, to mitigate the risks of AI going rogue.
Big Tech’s lobbying bulldozer succeeded in California last year, but people power built back and helped secure an AI Safety win there just days ago. Let’s all lend a hand, and RAISE the bar on AI regulation.
