Last night, Stephen Miller claimed the president has “plenary authority” over the U.S. military—in other words, absolute power to use America’s armed forces however he wants, including against his own citizens. That is the language of a king and a dictator, not a president.

This morning, Donald Trump said Illinois Governor JB Pritzker should be imprisoned for resisting the federal assault on Chicago.

This is the escalation we warned about: a White House claiming unlimited command of the military and threatening to jail elected leaders who stand up to it.
