Right now,
nearly 45 million acres of wild, roadless forests across 37 states are facing threats from logging and development. These forests aren’t just beautiful — they’re lifesavers. They provide clean, safe drinking water for millions, store massive amounts of carbon, shelter over 500 endangered species, and offer unforgettable outdoor adventures.
Roadless forests naturally filter out pollutants, prevent erosion, and keep water flowing clean and clear. In fact, more than 180 million people in 68,000 communities across the country depend on National Forest lands for their drinking water every day. Without strong, permanent protections, these critical watersheds and the clean water they provide could be lost.
Here’s what’s on the line:
* Safe, reliable drinking water for cities and small towns
* Hiking, fishing, camping, and hunting
* Natural defense against floods and wildfires
The 2001 Roadless Rule has kept these forests safe for decades by stopping new roads and logging in these wild places. If it is weakened, we all lose.
Our nation’s clean water and climate protections are under serious attack. Protecting roadless forests is one of the best natural ways we can fight back. These forests lock up huge amounts of carbon and absorb greenhouse gases, cooling the planet and buffering us against climate disasters.
That’s why Congress needs to pass the Roadless Area Conservation Act (H.R. 3930/S. 2042) to make sure these protections are locked in today and for future generations.
